In the opening bout of the evening the local boxer Mace was determined to impress the home crowd and made a fast start pushing CJ back to the ropes with quick and sustained combinations. CJ was able to score some single shots but was falling behind on the scorecards as Mace threw and landed far more punches. In the second round CJ knew he would have to change tactics if he was to emerge victorious and so began to match his opponent for work rate. With both boxers coming forwards throwing quick combination punches the crowd were treated to an impressive display of attacking skills. The sustained work rate allowed CJ to put Mace under pressure at times and allowed him to pull back the deficit in the score. Going into the final round the contest was all but even and both boxers continued form as they battled for victory with two handed attacks. Towards the last half of the round the hard-work CJ has put in training began to show as Mace slowed and CJ was able to gain the upper hand. A hard fought contest seen CJ awarded a close majority decision against a strong opponent.

George was faced with a difficult challenge giving height and weight to his Kingfisher opponent. George came forwards from the opening bell but the rangy Potter made it difficult for George to score clean punches. Finding it difficult to work his opponent out George tried a different tactic in the second round allowing his opponent to initiate the exchanges and use counter punching. This also proved to be unsuccessful however because at close range Potter held George and smothered his attacks. In the final round George knew he would have to work hard and so picked up his volume of punches in an attempt to push Potter onto the back foot. This provided George with more success and allowed him to land a succession of clean scoring blows. The last round flurry came a little too late however and the decision was awarded against the Colchester Boxer despite a brave performance.

CJ and George will return to the ring next Saturday when they box on the Harwich ABC open show in Dovercourt. They will be joined by club-mates Jack Karadzic and Reuben “The Magic Man” Gahan. Also next week Niamh Barton will be looking to secure a place in the national finals of the Female Junior ABA Championships when she boxes Millie Warren of Wells ABC in the semi-final match-up in Manchester
